Red Hook is a neighborhood of the New York City borough of Brooklyn. It was originally settled by the Dutch colonists in 1636 and was given its name of “Roode Hoek,” which means red hook. They named the area this for its shape, and the red clay soil that could found in the Upper New York Bay. During the Battle of Brooklyn (also known as the Battle of Long Island), a fort was constructed on the hook of the land called Fort Defiance.
