Details of experience:

Ms. Cheung came to The Phoenix Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on November 11th, 2024, from Memorial Sloan Cancer Center, where she was initially admitted for chronic weakness.

During her first 24 hours at The Phoenix, Ms. Cheung shared that her transition was seamless and expressed her satisfaction with the warm welcome from staff. On her first day, she was greeted by the Concierge department, where we took the opportunity to outline the process of her therapy journey and what she could expect throughout her stay. She was then introduced to our nursing team, who conducted a thorough evaluation and addressed any clinical questions she had.

During her first week, Ms. Cheung was paired with a compatible roommate with whom she could discuss her rehabilitation process. This helped her feel more comfortable and confident as she progressed through her stay. After her initial evaluation by the therapy team, Ms. Cheung began with bedside therapy and gradually transitioned to using the therapy equipment in the gym. She followed a daily therapy schedule, which included sessions three times a day, five days a week.

Before being admitted to our facility, Ms. Cheung was referred for ADL (Activities of Daily Living) training to enhance her self-care and independence, with the goal of ensuring a safe discharge home once her therapy was complete. Prior to admission, Ms. Cheung lived with constant pain while walking, which significantly impacted her daily life. During her first few days with us, she was seen by our pain management team to help her manage discomfort during therapy sessions. Ms. Cheung demonstrated a strong commitment to her recovery, challenging herself to use a walker and ambulate over 6 feet within the corridor daily with minimal assistance. On days without scheduled therapy, she practiced independently, with the approval of the therapy team. Her main goal was to ambulate more than 10 feet on a flat surface without experiencing pain.

In her final week at The Phoenix, Ms. Cheung was thrilled to return home to her loved ones, who had been visiting her daily to support and encourage her throughout her therapy journey. Before her admission, she struggled with ambulation due to pain and swelling in her feet, which limited her mobility. However, with The Phoenix team’s dedicated support, Ms. Cheung surpassed her therapy goals. She successfully ambulated over 200 feet using a walker with no assistance, requiring only supervision. Additionally, she showed significant progress in completing her daily self-care tasks independently, marking a successful and safe discharge.

The Phoenix team extends our best wishes to Ms. Cheung and sincerely thanks her for choosing us as her partner in her subacute rehabilitation journey!
