Details of experience:
Mr. M was admitted to The Phoenix Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on December 24, 2024 from New York Presbyterian Hospital and was initially was admitted for an unspecified fall and a previous motorcycle accident causing him to be less mobile.
During his first 24 hours at The Phoenix, he shared that his transition had gone smoothly and that the staff had been incredibly welcoming. He was warmly greeted by our multidisciplinary team, who took the time to introduce themselves and provide him with a thorough overview of what he could expect in the coming days. The team made sure to outline the services and support available to him, ensuring he felt well-informed and comfortable about his new environment. Mr. M also mentioned to the concierge team that this was his first time being in such a setting, and they reassured him that they were there to assist with any questions or concerns. Overall, his initial experience was positive, and he felt well-supported throughout his introduction to The Phoenix.
During his first week with us, Mr. M remained highly engaged in his therapy and demonstrated a strong determination to make progress. He shared that during his hospital stay, his previous nursing team had told him he might never walk again due to the severity of his accident, but he refused to let that discourage him. Despite facing significant challenges, he continued to give his best effort each day.
At the start of his stay, Mr. M required assistance with essential activities such as transferring from the bed to the chair and performing self-care tasks. Our dedicated nursing team provided continuous support, working closely with him around the clock, seven days a week. Meanwhile, our therapy team played an integral role in his rehabilitation, providing therapy sessions twice a day, five days a week, to help him improve his activities of daily living. Throughout his time here, Mr. M showed immense perseverance, and both our nursing and therapy teams were committed to helping him regain independence and improve his quality of life.
Before being admitted to our community, he was completely bedbound, with only minimal use of his fingers, and he was unable to transfer from the bed into a standing position or ambulate even short distances. He struggled to walk more than a few steps, and was unable to cover 100 feet on a flat surface. His condition presented a considerable challenge, but what stood out was his unwavering determination to regain function and independence.
