Fort Greene is a neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York City with a population of 15,903. Fort Greene is located in northwest Brooklyn in the area known as South Brooklyn, just across from Lower Manhattan and north of Prospect Park. It is listed on the New York State Registry and is also on the National Register of Historic Places. The neighborhood is named after an American Revolutionary War era fort that was built in 1776 under the supervision of General Nathanael Greene. General Greene aided General George Washing during the Battle of Long Island in 1776. Fort Greene Park originally called “Washington Park” is noted as Brooklyn’s first park.
